Activities & ParticipantsHundreds of participants volunteer their time to organize various activities throughout Alberta courthouses. 2007 activities included the cities of Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Fort McMurray, Drumheller, Edmonton and Calgary. Some of the events included: public speaking contests for junior and senior high students; poster contests on “what the law means to me” for elementary students and high school teams throughout the province competing in mock trials. There were family, children’s and criminal mock trials held with members of the judiciary and the legal profession participating. Tours of the courthouses, exhibition areas in each centre with drug and agriculture dog performances, and displays from Canada Customs, Alberta Fish & Wildlife, RCMP, Native Counseling, Family Counseling and Mediation Services, Legal Aid, and John Howard were just some of the features. The popular “Ask a Lawyer” booth was active in both Edmonton and Calgary. Edmonton had demonstrations from the bomb squad and tactical team and fingerprinting. |
