Demystifying the legal system

Law Day offers a free, fun, activity-filled day for those curious about Alberta Law

Calgary, Alberta Wouldn't it be interesting to have the court process explained in an informal, entertaining setting? Are you curious about Calgary’s new courthouse and the extensive security system? Law Day demystifies the court process by inviting Calgarians to the new Court of Queen's Bench Court House (601 - 5 Street S.W.) on Saturday, April 19th, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Law Day is a free event that promotes access to justice and introduces the general public to the key people in the judicial system including members of the police service, lawyers and judges.

“This is a great opportunity for people who are curious about the court system, families who are seeking an exciting activity day or for students interested in legal work,” says Angela Ovens, Law Day Advertising Sub-Committee Chair.

The 26th annual Law Day will open at 9 a.m. with a performance of "O Canada" and greetings from dignitaries. Law Day 2008 activities include:

  • Tours of the new Court House, including Calgary’s first Aboriginal courtroom and the prisoner cells;
  • Booths representing numerous law related services will be on-site, in addition to the Calgary Bomb Squad and a CheckStop Bus;
  • Public Speaking Competition for Jr. and Sr. High School debate teams;
  • Sit in on a Family Law Trial starring Calgary community mascots;
